Parent Teacher Associations/Organizations

Following extensive research and experience over many years, the National PTA maintains that "Parent and family involvement increases student achievement and success."

National Standards for Parent/Family Involvement Programs were developed by the National PTA in

collaboration the National Coalition for Parent Involvement in Education (NCPIE). These standards (click on the link above to view them) were created to be used in conjunction with other national standards to support the overall learning and success of children. Parental involvement is actually one of the eight National Education Goals: Every school will promote partnerships that will increase parental involvement and participation in promoting the social, emotional and academic growth of children.

There are many different ways that you, as a parent, can get involved in your children's education and the school they attend. You can:
  • Attend and participate in school activities such as Open House, sports events, class trips, fundraising events, and book fairs (there are many more).
  • Get to know your child's teacher(s) personally. Encourage frequent communication and make yourself available to your child's teacher(s).
  • Start a PTA/PA in your school

If your school already has a PTA or PA, you should considering joining it. If your school doesn't have such an organization, you can take the first steps to introduce one into your child's school.

  • Begin by identifying a group of parents who share your interest.
  • Organize a parent's meeting to begin discussions about formation of a PTA. In most cases, once this first meeting is past the effort will take a life of its own.
  • If you know of another Islamic school that has a PTA/PA, find out who the contact person is and talk to them about how they founded their organization.

These are just a few suggestions!
