Theory that Impacts Curriculum and Teaching

Brain Compatible Learning - Did you ever wonder what is going on inside the heads of those lovely children we teach? Well, we know more today than ever before, and what we know can help answer the questions about phonics, discipline, learning disabilities, and much more.
Differentiated Instruction - We don't all wear the same size shoe, so why would our brains operate the same way for all people? They shouldn't and they don't. Our brains are designed to work in a variety of ways, which means children learn in a variety of ways. Some children are auditory learners while others are visual learners, and there are other styles of learning. Our job as educators is to learn about these differences and what we can do to direct our teaching to the various strengths each style brings to a child.
Writing Theory - Writing oftentimes seems like an unwanted stepchild. We know we have to have it (we even love putting it in math), but we don't know quite understand it. How do children learn to write? What are the cognitive processes of writing? What can we do as educators to improve that learning? Learn about an appropriate role for spelling, handwriting, grammar and mechanics.
Reading Theory - This is the area that most educators love and enjoy. It combines a foundational aspect of education with a foundational aspect of Islam - "Iqra." Come browse this area, learn something new, and share your knowledge with others. Whole language, phonics, recitation, compre-hension or a combination of all - see if the experts make sense. Share your own hard-earned wisdom with us.
Math Theory - So much is changing here. What are the theories behind the "Math Wars" raging across the United States? Figure out which approach is best for your students. Learn about working with parents to come up with a program that does everything you want it to do. What is math and how do children best learn it?
Student-Centered Learning/ Individualized Learning - A bit different from differentiated learning, this focuses on the child as the heart of teaching. It sounds like a "no brainer," but it isn't. Sometimes we focus so hard on learning a new textbook, theory, or method that we accidentally overlook the student. What is student-centered learning? How can you apply it in your classroom? Are there any disadvantages? Learn how to individualize learning so that students learn at their own pace instead of goose-stepping with their peers and learn why that is desirable.
Integrated/Theme-based learning vs. Traditional subject-segmented learning - This is probably a complementary method to the Tarbiyah Project in its ultimate form. This discussion looks at the natural way of integrated/theme-based learning as opposed to an imposed framework of subject-segmented learning that we have inherited from the Industrial Revolution. If reading across the curriculum is good, and writing across the curriculum is also good, and math across the curriculum is coming, then why not surrender all and fully integrate all subjects across the curriculum?

More topics will be added as educators request. Check back to see if something new has been added.
